Dave is an author; in fact, he has written a 3 book fantasy series called “The Demon Curse” and it features demons and how they interact with the human world. The family he connects with is affluent and able, but to their surprise the baby they have is weak and troubled so unlike his parents. Could this child ever be one to walk into a dangerous situation with confidence?

Now, Dave may or may not know that I am posting a portion of the book per week, like the installments that writers used to do in a newspaper. I post an installment once a week (until I get caught) so without further introduction I give you the sixth installment of The Demon Curse Series Book #1 entitled “Son of Ruin” written by David E. Hiatt.

Chapter 2 The Strange Boy Installment 6

At the hospital all went smoothly. The nurse administered an IV and soon the labor pains began. At the right time, the epidural was given, and they waited. Every so often, the doctor would enter the room and check to see how the delivery was progressing.

Later that afternoon, after much waiting, the doctor and two nurses briskly walked in bringing a flurry of motion. Sheets put down, commands given to nurses, then much pushing and prodding until Jonathan finally entered the world. A weak, soulful little cry pealed forth from the little purple baby boy.

The nurse wrapped him in a towel, cooing softly to him, and handed him to his mother.

She looked down at her whimpering child. He was small, sickly, and needy. His head was long and extended from the trip through the birth canal. He looked pitiful to her.

She did the best she could to care for him in the hospital, but he didn’t have the strength to breastfeed. Even a bottle was too much for him, and the nurses finally fed him intravenously.

The couple left the hospital without their child. Their last view of him was a frail infant with tubes and IV’s sticking out of him. He looked barely human. It was apparent to Jonathan’s mother and father that the boy did not fit into their plans at all.

After a couple of weeks, Jonathan became strong enough to come home with his parents. By this time, they had begun to work through their disappointment and were determined to refocus their lives on their work and social lives.

Jonathan’s parents were good people, and he did not lack any of the amenities that a young child would need. They hired the best nanny from the most recommended service. His room was covered with bright paint, filled with smart toys, soft bedding, and crisp curtains, as if to infuse the room with energy that wasn’t in its occupant. Yet he remained frail, weak and anxious.

There you have it. The sixth piece of the book. Let me know if you enjoyed this, want more, or anything else I can do to make it easier to read.
