You may not know Dave and I are brothers. You also may not know that Dave has written a 3 book fantasy series called “The Demon Curse” about demons and their business among humans, specifically a family in Chicago that unintentionally bumped into the demon world.

Now, Dave may or may not know that I have obtained a copy of his first book and decided to share it with you. I am planning on posting a portion of the book per week, like the installments writers used to do in the Charles Dickens era. I will post this weekly (until I get caught) so without further introduction I give you the first installment of The Demon Curse Series Book #1 “Son of Ruin” written by David E. Hiatt.

Chapter 1 The Summoning

Fire rises from broken, craggy rocks and the demon horde screams and gyrates. The annual conjure of yearlings, the Summoning, has finally begun. In this world of eternal black sky and jagged, boulder-strewn ground, flame and molten rock burn through the cracks and crevices.

On a wide plain, the sea of screaming demons perform their yearly dance. They have dull, red skin, sharp yellow teeth and black beady eyes. Horns crown their heads and they have split hooves for feet. They glare at an ancient cauldron standing five feet high and sitting on a bed of glowing coals. A group of ten large and powerful demons move around the black pot as they perform ancient magic through primal rites, their arms waving through the thick, hot air.

Each of the thousands present has taken turns drawing blood from their leathery hands, allowing it to drip into a ragged trough cut into the rock. The blood runs dark and red through a network of trenches, finally spilling into the cauldron. When all have bled, the infernal dance reaches a fever pitch.

In a cave, on an outcrop of rolling stone, high above the gathering, Hellion, the eldest of his kind, sits by the entrance. His eyes are pools of ancient evil. His massive bulk is scarred and burned from battles of destruction. He has lived a full thousand years longer than the next oldest of his kind. He is ancient, though not eternal, as all demons eventually perish.

Hellion had moved to the entrance of the cave at the beginning of the conjure. His bleary eyes stare out, waiting for the newest demons to arrive.

There you have it. The first piece of the book. Let me know if you enjoyed this, want more, or anything else I can do to make it easier to read.
