Online reviews have become a battle ground for businesses as one person with a grudge can cause all sorts of problems. Retailers now spend time and money to keep track of sites where negative reviews might be posted so they can respond.

Announcement from TikTok Will Increase the Pressure

With Google, Yelp, Trip Advisor and every online shopping site offering customer reviews on every product, this announcement from TikTok is just more of the same. However, the reach of this social media giant might require more attention.

The new feature on TikTok prompts you after visiting an establishment to leave a review. If it is anything less than 5 stars, it requires you to leave an explanation. This is another way for a business to boost visibility. It also could add to the headache of bad reviews.

Do We Need More Reviewing Options?

This makes me wonder if we will reach a point where reviews lose their clout. With so many reviews all over the place, I spend less time looking at them. The number of reviews seems more important. If a lot of people have tried the place, then I’ll give it a shot.

Real person endorsements always carry more weight. I always pay attention to someone I know who has had a good experience. Same is true the other way. You probably know friends or family who you do not trust when it comes to their food recommendations.

Maybe this TikTok addition will be a game changer and supply needed information about where to eat. It also could tip the scales even more away from these never-ending online reviews and our trust in them.
