Frugal Utah Grandpas And A Frozen Chicken Recall
What would your frugal Utah grandpa do with the Perdue frozen chicken recall?
Perdue Foods recently announced a recall of over 167,000 pounds of frozen chicken. But here is the thing the recall was voluntary and was a cautionary move. Not to say that any of us would try and salvage the chicken, but the company’s Senior VP of Food Safety and Quality, Jeff Shaw explained that a thin strand of metal wire was accidentally added at the manufacturing process.
You know your frugal grandpa would find the metal strand and just pull it out. "Boom, you got a good bag of frozen chicken," I can hear him saying. If it was shredded into the meal, he could get it out with a magnet.
Here is the description of the products you should be aware of:
- Perdue chicken breast tenders with a “best if used by” date of March 23, 2025.
- Perdue Simply Smart gluten-free breaded chicken breast nuggets, also with a “best if used by” date of March 23, 2025.
- Butcher Box organic gluten-free chicken breast nuggets, sharing the same expiration date.

These meals, marked with the plant code P-33944, were shipped nationwide and sold online, so it's possible that you have one in your freezer. So maybe not do what grandpa would do, but you might consider repurposing the product (sans metal) into compost. Or, if you’re feeling crafty, maybe a DIY doorstop? You could stack them on a plate and throw them out to get that feeling of wasting the food your kids won't eat without feeling frustrated.
Come to think of it grandpa would not only save the chicken, but he would also repurpose the metal wire like a kid who found a toy in the cereal box.
