The Recall Process

You know the drill, companies come out with different products. They hear back from us that the product might be dangerous and then they issue a recall on that product after which it gets pulled from the shelves of stores.

I imagine labs where companies test their items for all the different possible scenarios to make sure that a new offering is safe for a target market. It seems like often the product sneaks past this process and we act as the lab, testing items by watching friends and family use the object to see if there is a problem.

The Company

Now I don’t mind giving some permissions on a young company or a bigger pass to a newly invented market, but the company we are talking about is Gerber. They have been around long enough that even their mascot baby looks dated. Who knew the look of a baby face was even able to trend? And the service they provide is to feed babies, an industry that has been around since...hmmm since the dawn of humankind. So, you would think that this company might have ways to test products carefully before they ever hit the shelves.

Gerber Recall

However, Gerber has released—and now recalled—a baby teething snack that has been proven to be a choking hazard. Again, how this happens, when they have been serving some of the smallest target customers in the human family for years, is a little bit amazing. But this is where we are.

The Problem

Now for the ultimate slap in the “what are we doing with ourselves?” face. Many stores, although the product has been recalled since the first of the year, still have these teething treats on their shelves.
