5 Foods That Will Take Utahns Back in Time
Nostalgia Can Be Beneficial for Your Mental Health
There was a time when they thought nostalgia was unhealthy, but now the benefits of looking back are recognized. It reduces loneliness and increases a sense of belonging. Remembering the time when you were surrounded by love makes you feel more secure.
That is why I am recommending you cook up some foods from the past. There is nothing like smells and tastes from your childhood to fuel nostalgic feelings and bring back good memories. Think about what you ate as a child and look up some of the best ones.
My Five Foods to Get You Started
Here are some things that take me back and even if they don’t work for you, they might inspire you to start thinking.
Tater Tot Casserole
My mom had a ton of kids, and this was an easy favorite. Brown some hamburger with salt and pepper, throw in a can of creamed mushroom, put a bag of frozen tater tots on top with some cheese and throw it in the oven till it is hot all the way through.
Loaded Potatoes
This was made on special occasions like a big football game. Easy and takes you back to good times. Take a cooked potato, cut it in half, load on sour cream, green onions, cheese and loads of bacon and toss it in the oven till the cheese melts.
Olive Loaf Bologna Sandwich
Ok, I know this one is probably just me. I love the bologna with the olives in it. You can get it at a deli or the Oscar Mayer version and put it on bread with plenty of mayo. My wife and kids are not fans so I have to intentionally seek it out because it isn't coming home.
French Bread Pizza
Once again easy, but seems special. Grab French bread from the grocery store, cut it in half, slather on some spaghetti sauce and add peperoni and cheese. Toast it in the oven and eat. I like to dip it in ranch for that extra kick.
Chocolate Malt Shake
Malt used to be a big deal, but has fallen out of favor. Vanilla ice cream with chocolate flavoring and a spoon full of malt. You can add the chocolate sauce and whip cream if you want to make it fancy.

If none of these meals remind you of your childhood, find one that does. That ride down memory lane is a good one. I may even throw on a Clint Eastwood movie while I eat and reminisce.
