BYU Students Design New App That is Kind of Like Home Swap for Learning Languages
When you are trying to learn another language, having a conversation with a native speaker can be invaluable. A couple of students at BYU are working to make it happen through an app.
Finding to Make Language Immersion Affordable
You can trade a house with someone in a foreign country over the internet. This is a way to find cheap lodging if you find someone who wants to visit the U.S. in the country you plan to visit. You can do the same with a car or RV.
So, why not facilitate conversation between people who are trying to learn each other’s language. This is the idea of Stephen Garner and Huey Kolowich who are students at Brigham Young University and have developed the app UniLex.
App Helps People Learning Language Find Each Other
There are programs where you can pay to have a conversation with a person who speaks the language you are trying to learn, but the hourly rate is fairly high and out of reach of a student’s budget. The idea is to introduce users with compatible needs.
Rather than have students every minute of conversation, they pay a monthly prescription and log in to a language speaking community. If you are trying to speak Spanish, you can converse with someone in a Spanish speaking country who is trying to learn English.
