Astonishing: Flying Squirrels Live In Utah And Glow Pink
Most Don't Know This Wild Animal Lives in Utah
When hiking in Utah forests, keep your eye out for flying squirrels. Wait, those little hanglider rodents that soar between branches can be found in Utah? According to the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, flying squirrels do make their home in the beehive state.
Red squirrels and chipmunks are easy to find when camping or hiking, but most people don’t realize the flying squirrel is also pretty common in Utah. They don’t actually fly, but have skin that stretches like a wingsuit and lets them glide from branch to branch.
Where to Find Flying Squirrels
They are nocturnal animals and that may be the reason you don’t see them too often. They are found in coniferous forests in the state. They hang out near the upper branches, so if you want to spot one, you have to keep your eyes peeled.
As to actually see one glide down from the top of a tree, if you see one, stay still for a while and hope you get lucky. The average glide in their little skin wingsuits is 65 feet which would be pretty spectacular.
They Glow in the Dark
They also apparently glow if you shine a black light on them. According to this article a flying squirrel’s fur underneath glows bubble gum pink when a black light is shown on them. I really want to give this a try if I can find a strong enough light to hit the top branches where flying squirrels hang out.
