Competition for Medals Less Intense in 2024

There was a time in past Summer Olympics when the United States had stiff competition from other countries. In the 1976 games, the U.S. was in third place in the medal count behind East Germany and the Soviet Union.

In 1980 Summer Games the United States was even worse. We were last place in the medal count behind every other country. Of course, we also boycotted those games, so that might have had something to do with it.

These days the Soviet Union is gone, and Germany has been reunited, but isn't as dominant. China has become more competitive in the race for medals, but even so, the U.S. is predicted to be the country with the most heading home from Paris.

What Do the Experts Predict in Paris?

According to this article from CBS Sports, the U.S. should be the country that wins the most medals this year and they predict we will end up with 123 medals overall. This is their best guess after analyzing all the events and the athletes competing.

Knowing this, it kind of takes the drama out of watching and counting wins. What is the point of checking the medal count each day if the experts have told us we have pretty much already won. Unless we take this very seriously.
