Chapter 5 Solomon Installment 23

Jonathan was four years old when his mother became pregnant. The home was filled with a new hope, and he felt better about things. There was a feeling of anticipation about his parents and his mom took more of an interest in the home and caring for her eldest son. Jonathan cried less and ate more. He still felt anxious, but it wasn’t as debilitating as it had been.

When Solomon was born, he didn’t cry. The doctor who delivered him at first thought the baby wasn’t breathing. He handed the child to the nurse who prepared to clear his mouth, but on closer inspection discovered the child was inhaling and exhaling normally.

A sense of calm came over her as Solomon looked peacefully up at the attendant. Her name was Bern and she had delivered hundreds of babies, but never one like this child. A smile spread across her face as she stared down at those peaceful, solemn, blue eyes. Birth always filled her with wonder. For a moment she had a sense of all the little lives she had helped come into the world. She felt a warm gratitude.

The doctor turned and asked, “How is the child?”

“He is doing really well.” She said it with such conviction that the doctor turned to look at the boy. That calm, little face showed none of the strain of childbirth and he too felt something different. His mind focused and he could feel the lives of the mother and child that rested in his hands. His vision was crisp, and his hands were sure, and he marveled for the first time in a long while at the miracle that is life. It was as if he was performing the medical procedure for the first time.
