People Have Been Parking on Dinosaur Bones When Visiting Utah Museum
Would you discover some fossils if you dug at a random place in Utah? It makes you wonder when you learn about this story from near Vernal where they found people had been parking on the bones of the ancient animals they were going to see.
Dinosaur Museum Discovers Bones Under the Parking Lot
It was time to redo the parking lot of an exhibit at Dinosaur National Monument. When crews removed the old black top, they discovered some hard rocks that looked like they might be fossils.
Turns out they were and paleontologists were called in. They ended up removing 3,000 pounds of dinosaur bones that they believe belonged to a long neck dinosaur called diplodocus.
Fossil Excavations Began in 1909
To be fair, this isn’t just any old place in Utah, but an area that has been excavated in the past for dinosaur fossils. It's the reason there is a museum here in the first place. Still, it makes you wonder how many fossils are right under our feet, or under our car tires for that matter.
The Quarry Exhibit Hall at the monument sits over a preserved site where you can see well over a thousand dinosaur fossils that are still imbedded in the rock. When deciding to redo the parking lot, they thought they might find more fossils.
