Gen Z is hitting their mid to late 20’s and has started having kids. Each generation names their children after things they value, and Gen Z is no different. If you are a grandparent, expect to see your grandkids get names you have never heard of.

The Influence of Anime on Gen Z

This generation has grown up on anime shows and is looking at names of characters they love. These often, but not always, come from a Japanese influence. Girl names like Mei, Historia and Clarisse could become popular. Boy names include Loid, Tidus and Kaito.

According to this article from nameberry, Gen Z also wants to be careful with cultural appropriation and so will be wary of using names from cultures that aren’t their own. Still, expect more names from other countries to enter the mainstream.

You Thought There Were Some Weird Spellings, Just Wait

The upcoming generation does not feel bound by traditional ways of spelling. Expect more creative spellings, even using symbols, numbers and apostrophes in names. They may not be able to put these spellings on birth certificates, but that won’t mean they can’t use them.

Gen Z doesn’t feel as tied to a name either. So, they may change what they go by depending on the situation. They might have a different name for work than for when they are with friends an even something else online. This will probably extend to their kids as well.

It should be fun to see what baby names become popular in the future. Whatever Gen Z chooses, it probably will cause older generations to roll their eyes. That’s kind of how it goes.
