Ka-Ching…Here’s What Utah Parents Spend on Travel Teams
Youth sports have become a big business. Where once you could join a rec league and then try out for your high school team, it is now about travel teams that start around age 7. These teams can play in multiple tournaments a year.
What Does It Cost to Play on a Traveling Team
Parents are putting out anywhere from $1,000 to $3,500 according to this site. Some are even forking over $10,000 for their child to play on the elite teams. This is a major commitment of time and money.
The idea was to provide upgraded competition for the young athletes and provide exposure for their talent. The number of leagues and tournaments has steadily grown as have the number of participants.
Are You Getting What You are Paying for?
With so much money on the line, the number of traveling teams has blossomed. Many parents and their kids have been swept up in the fear of missing out, and in some cases, some tournaments have become more like rec leagues.
There are also many cases where children burn out. If your child plays baseball year-round starting at 7 years old, by the time they hit high school, they may want a break. Some find their passion for the sport has worn thin.

That's not to discount the experience. Life long friendships and good team lessons can be gained from sports. If your child has a passion, there's nothing wrong with helping them accomplish it.
That said, it is easy as a parent to go all in and more on your kid and sports. It is good to remember the benefit of being well rounded. If your child is a prodigy, they will probably make the team even if they don’t play every weekend while growing up.
