Tragic Weekend in Utah Needs Tips For Grieving
A family friend died over the weekend and our daughter had the chance to be with them as he passed.
It seems like this weekend was rough as Utah news seemed to feature more tragedies than usual. With this in mind I thought it would be nice to refresh some thoughts on how we can help someone close to us as they are in grief.
Here are some insights that our daughter brought home after recently going through this painful process with her friend as she mourned the loss of her father.
Admit You Are Nervous
You are not a professional therapist and this is not easy for you either. It is OK to say admit you don't know what to say or that you don't know what you are doing. She said this opened up the ability to be real.
Give Them Space
Sometimes your friend will need advice, but often they will need space to express their feelings. Be a listener and let them discover how they are coping with the loss.
Let Feelings Flow
She said they laughed and cried and shared memories. Letting sentiments shift and flow seemed to really help them deal with the moments as they came.
Be There
If you do have time, try to be there emotionally. Listen fully and avoid distractions. If the burden is too heavy admit it often we grieve together so being upfront about your feelings can allow them to help you too.

Offer What You Can
If you can offer help, make it solid. An empty offer seems more obvious when the need is more extreme. Avoid comments like asking them to call you if they need anything. If you don't have the strength or time just admit it and tell them what you are able to do.
