If you are hungry in America, should you come to Utah?

Feeding America looked at food insecurity in the United States and gave each state a percentage for those who could be going hungry. According to the site, this is what they mean by the term:

Food insecurity is defined by the United States Department of Agriculture as the lack of access, at times, to enough food for an active, healthy life.

Access to food can be impacted by unemployment and economic conditions.

Alabama is highest on the list with 16.3%. Many states throughout the south have higher rates. In the west, Nevada is at 13% while Arizona rolls in 10.3% for food insecurity.

So, how does Utah fare? The beehive state is at 9.5% with much of the food insecurity coming from the eastern part of the state. That is a low number compared to the rest of the county, although not the lowest. That goes to North Dakota at just 5.5%

Wallethub looked at the neediest cities in the country. Most bigger states have multiple cities on the list. Detroit was the highest followed by Brownsville, Texas. Utah has two cities on the list, Salt Lake and West Valley, but they do not appear until after the first 100.

This study looked at poverty rates as well as economic opportunities.

Looking at the country as a whole, Utah does well when it comes to food insecurity. If you are hungry, you might want to stop by Utah for a bite on your way to North Dakota.
