A survey was done of vacationers about the cities in the U.S. and where they were greeted warmly as a visitor. Utah seems like a friendly place but only two cities in the beehive state made the list and they were nowhere near the top.

For Friendly Greetings Look to Hawaii or the South

Of the 3,011 people surveyed, they found Hilo, Hawaii as the place where you are most likely to receive a smile and a greeting when visiting. The next 22 entries on the list are south of the Mason Dixon line.

Anyone who has visited the islands and towns in the southern part of the United States will not find this too surprising. Pleasantness seems to be in the culture and stopping at a convenience store feels like visiting grandma’s house for a treat.

Utah’s Highest-Ranking City for Friendliness Might be a Surprise

There aren’t a lot of cities on the list from the western part of the United States. Utah does have the first one, and it might be friendly because visitors don’t know how to say it. Toole was ranked number 43 on the list. Who wouldn’t smile hearing someone call your town tooly.

The only other city on the list was St. George at number 105. All the rest of the cities in the state are apparently too busy to give a proper greeting. This isn’t surprising if you have lived in the west. We are more reserved in public.

It might have something to do with the culture of the first settlers. Something to do with carving out a home in a rugged land and being fiercely self-reliant.
