Utah lawmakers passed a bill that was signed by the governor that prohibits Utah students from using a cell phone in the classroom. This was after looking at studies that showed how much better students do without distractions. One sporting event feels the same way.

The Masters Policy Might be the Way

The premiere golfing event is the Masters Tournament where they have banned all fans entering the event from using cell phones. They say it is in part to make a better experience for those fans so they can enjoy the moment and not miss any of the action.

This was born out with this year's event as every I was on Rory Mcilroy as he defeated Justin Rose in sudden death.  Every eye was riveted on the action with no one glancing at a screen to check for a text or trying to take a selfie along with the action.

Former golf pro Paige Spiranac had this to say about it.

Should Other Sports Follow the Master’s Example?

What if football stadiums didn’t allow phones into the stands? What if basketball arenas had large bag to deposit your phone on the way in? Would it change the experience? In an intense game, I’m not sure it would be any different.

That is not to say that it wouldn’t have a big impact on how I would enjoy the game. It is hard to stay focused on an event when I know I can glance at my phone at any time. Yet, it’s dumb to go to a huge social event and not get social.

If it makes for a better school experience and people are paying big bucks to go to a tournament that seems even more special without phones, this might be something to do more of. I kind of hope other events start making a phone free space.
