One of the tall tales told in America is of Paul Bunyan and his Blue Ox that cleared the land of trees. He apparently made his way through Utah as there is a stack of logs he left on a hill in the middle of the state.

Strange Formation of Rocks Discovered in Juab County

You can hike to this “woodpile” left by this mythical figure on a well-maintained trail by the BLM. It is a one-mile trail with some moderately steep inclines. The giant logs are made of lava rock and some look strewn about next to those that are neatly stacked.

This is part of an ancient volcano or caldera that was active in the distant past. Caldera is where a volcano has collapsed and is more like a bowl. A later flow filled cracks. Similar formations have them stand on end, but these are on the side.

The woodpile is about 15 feet tall, and you walk around on it. It gives stellar views of the valley below. Just be careful if you see some huge dude with an axe or giant blue bull, they might be put out if you are messing up the stack.

Unique Arch Found with Paul Bunyan’s Woodpile

Utah is home to many amazing arches, but this lava formation has an arch you won’t find in Arches National Park. It was created when the water entered into the cracks then later froze and broke the rock out.

If you enjoy exploring interesting places in Utah, this is one to put on the list. Since it is in the middle of Utah it isn’t too far from anywhere you live in the state.
