Aunt Gert Learns Plans a Birthday Party

As they celebrate memorial day Aunt Gert learns that Solomon has a birthday on the way and decides to help them celebrate. She takes the time to inform his parents that a 12th birthday is important and plans to revisit. Chapter 8 Aunt Gert Installment 47

She then instructed Jonathan’s mother and father that the twelfth birthday was an important one and that Solomon would be having the full-blown deal, with friends and everything. Jonathan’s dad had sheepishly agreed, and Gert said she would be back on that day to make sure it was properly celebrated.

Jonathan spent the rest of the holiday listening to Gert tell stories and having her show him how to eat properly.

Proper Teasing Identified

Though she teased him mercilessly, as she did everyone, he never felt picked on or bullied by his Aunt Gert. When he had first started school, he had felt vulnerable and had become the target of bigger meaner kids. They had picked on him and he had felt helpless and humiliated by the experience. He became keenly aware when someone was trying to bully him.

Aunt Gert was a large, boisterous woman, but he could tell that she was truly interested in him and genuinely liked him. There was kindness behind her manner. The times when Aunt Gert visited were the rare moments when Jonathan felt like they were a real family.

He was looking forward to Gert’s arrival. When she did, Solomon’s birthday party would officially begin.
