Aunt Gert Learns a Thing About Solomon

As they celebrate memorial day Aunt Gert learns that Solomon has a birthday on the way and decides to help them celebrate. Aunt Gert is possibly the best thing for this family to find their inner party. Chapter 8 Aunt Gert Installment 46

“You’re welcome, Solomon. It’s not easy shopping for the world’s youngest philosopher.”

They moved the party out back so that Jonathan’s father could cook on the barbecue. Aunt Gert found a nice, sturdy patio chair made from iron. She sat down in it carefully like she didn’t fully trust it.

Jonathan’s parents barely celebrated birthdays and would probably skip holidays if it weren’t for Aunt Gert. It wasn’t that they disliked holidays; they were just preoccupied with their different projects. They really didn’t know how to enjoy time off anyway. Although Gert said it like she saw it, and often that was pretty direct, her oversized personality had a way of making things feel like an event.

They ate a meal featuring barbecue chicken and topped it off with a slice of Aunt Gert’s triple chocolate cake. Gert kept the conversation going with a constant flow of stories followed by questions and then more stories. Talking to the boys she had learned that Solomon was turning twelve.

“Are you having a birthday party Socrates?” asked Gert sitting in her sturdy iron chair.

Jonathan and Solomon looked at her not comprehending.

“You know...a birthday party. Maybe have some of your little philosopher friends over?”

The two brothers looked at each other and then back at Gert.

“You do celebrate your birthdays around here, right?” She looked over at their father who was busy cleaning the chrome on his grill so that it looked brand new again.

“Oh… yes. The nanny usually buys us a cake and gives us a gift card,” said Jonathan.

“That’s it?” said Aunt Gert incredulously.
