BYU Student’s AI Breakthrough Is The Key to Bee’s Dance
If You Could Talk to the Animals
We are one step closer to becoming Dr. Doolittle who could carry on a conversation with his animal friends. Thanks to a study being carried out by students at Brigham Young University we can understand what bees are saying in real time.
They call it bee waggle. It is the dance bees do when they have found a food source and give directions on how to get there. Using computers and artificial intelligence, the students were able to interpret the angle of the dance and the number of wags.
They compared the information to where the bees went and soon, they were getting a good idea of the information being relayed as it was happening. That was in 2023. Since then, they have been taking the research to a new level.
Can Humans Talk Back to the Bees?
This year they have been working on making a mechanical bee that can be controlled by the researchers to send signals to the bees. They will make their bee waggle and see if the real bees will follow the directions.
This research will help understand agriculture and better pollination. It also is furthering the use of AI with understanding the world we live in.

I don’t know where this will lead, but I hope we can get some insight into how the drones feel about working for the queen. How do they feel about their hours and work conditions and is there any talk of forming a union? That's what I want to know anyway.
