Chapter 5 Solomon Installment 25

Looking at Solomon, his low sense of himself didn’t matter. His fears seemed distant. All the ‘what ifs’ that tortured him, what if someone broke into their house, what if a tornado ripped through the town, what if his father lost his job, all the irrational thoughts that invaded his mind seemed distant and inconsequential as he looked at his brother.

His breathing slowed and his body felt serene. Jonathan’s perceptions around him became heightened. He could feel the wood grain in the chair under his feet, the warmth of the air on his skin, the plastic rails on the palms of his hands.

Even though his brother was just an infant, as he looked at him, Jonathan felt understood and appreciated for who he was. He didn’t feel like there was something wrong with him, instead he felt complete and perfect in his place in the universe. He felt loved.

Solomon Grows

Looking at Solomon now, as it always did, filled him with the same comfort. He was still carrying the clumsily wrapped present he had picked out for his brother’s big day in his sweaty hand. He smiled to himself at the mess of tape and wrapping, but even if it turned out to be a dumb present, Solomon would see the effort he had put into selecting it. He would appreciate it for what it was.

Jonathan heard the doorbell ring through the open patio door. Soon another one of Solomon’s friends made his way through the house and outside. Solomon and the others hailed the newcomer like a group of old college professors, slapping him on the back and laughing and nodding.

Many had noted after meeting Solomon that he seemed like an old soul in a young boy’s body. Jonathan didn’t care. He loved being around his brother.

Brotherhood Friends

After Solomon was born the two were always together. Right from the first, Jonathan took a great interest in holding and caring for his younger brother. As he grew and began to walk, they went everywhere, Jonathan walking and holding Solomon’s hand.

Though their parents found the boy’s relationship strange and a bit off putting, the change in Jonathan was refreshing and liberating. He no longer cried and wallowed at the side of rooms, but seemed comfortable, even happy, as long as he was with his Solomon. As an added benefit, the baby needed no care at all. What Jonathan couldn’t handle the nanny did, and even she found herself free to spend most of her time maintaining social media pages and texting friends and family.
