If you have thought about building an underground bunker in case the world goes crazy, you are participating in a long-time human tradition. All over the world they have discovered secure places that were built under the earth’s surface. 

An Entire City Lived Below the Earth in Turkey 

Derinkuyu is an ancient city that was built deep underground. This wasn’t just for a family or a tribe. The 18 levels of underground dwellings could house 20,000 people all hidden under the surface. 

This is the largest of its kind, but not the only one by far. Some other famous examples are in Italy called Orvieto with over 1,200 tunnels that connect to carved out rooms and even a church. Also, Petra that was carved into the cliff walls in Southern Jordan. 

Why Do Humans Tunnel Underground So Often? 

Whenever we feel threatened, we humans start looking for a safe place. Think of storm shelters and basements in the Midwest where people run to when a tornado threatens. But it isn’t just when weather is dangerous. 

The underground city in Turkey has been used by different groups trying to avoid invasion from other nations. The last to use it were the Christians who were trying to avoid persecution from Rome and later governments.

If you are thinking about an underground shelter in case the world goes to pot, it might be good to build a city more than a single dwelling. These ancient people seemed to recognize their social needs and that they might be stronger with a community of people underground.
