The way buildings are constructed could be in for some big changes thanks to a deal made by Walmart with a company that specializes in 3D printed buildings. This technology has been slow to be implemented, but this announcement will speed things up.

Printing Solid Objects One Layer at a Time

The idea to make solid objects by laying down thin layers of plastic in a pattern was first thought of and designed in the 1980s. Since then, machines that print almost anything from computer file have become increasingly popular.

The concept has been developed for constructing walls out of cement. A large-scale printer on a crane like setup puts down layers of cement that slowly builds up the walls of the structure.

Even though this idea has the potential to save money in the construction process, it has been slow to catch on. This has been in part because of logistics and the need to update regulations for building this way.

8 Future Walmart Buildings to Use New Construction Technology

Last year a company named Alquist 3D built an 8,000 square foot building for Walmart in Tennessee. They printed the walls of the building using a giant printer and it took longer than expected, however, they learned a lot.

You can see how much they learned by the 5,000 square foot building in Alabama that went up in just 7 days. Now Walmart has hired the firm to build 8 more buildings this coming year.

This announcement is going to spur the use of this technology. There are already other firms that have 3D printed houses that are jumping into building commercial buildings. Thanks to Walmart, the adoption of this new technology will grow quickly.
