Should Utah Use This Technology That Makes Road Lines Glow?
Australia has been trying out glow in the dark paint for dark roads that don’t have streetlights. This could be a solution that would make driving a lonely highway in Utah safer without the cost of putting up expensive light poles.
The Development of More Reflective Paint
The idea in Australia is to create a paint that reflects more light than white paint and make them more visible. In Malaysia they found these roads useful, but the paint cost 20 times what basic white costs and has slowed down them implementing it.
The Utah Department of Transportation adds glass beads to the paint to make the lines reflect, and they are always looking at better ways to mark Utah roads. For some dark highways something like the Netherlands has done could be the answer.
Road Stores Light During the Day to Glow at Night
The Netherlands has marked a roadway with paint that charges during the daylight hours and glows for 8 hours at night. What happens when the sun doesn’t come out? They can charge the lines using solar panels.
There is a bike path there that uses this technology to light up a design inspired by Van Gogh. This thing is beautiful as the design looks a bit like his Starry Night painting but might be too distracting for a highway.
