Stamped concrete is popular in Utah. It looks great, at least at first. Here's some reasons why you may want to reconsider putting this on your patio, driveway, or around your pool.

The Allure of Stamped Concrete

This style of concrete uses a process of finishing the concrete with a pattern that looks like stone, brick, or tile. A color is added and the patterns are pressed into the cement in the finishing process. A sealant is applied after it has dried.

It is customizable in the colors and patterns and can make boring cement pop. It can accent a driveway or backyard that looks amazing. However, there are reasons you should consider before making this choice.

The Drawbacks of Installing This Demanding Surface

Stamped concrete is a slick surface. If you are putting this around a pool it can be really slippery. This is true for walkways when it rains or snows. It might be better to keep it to the edge of walkways and avoid deck areas altogether.

Another problem is it needs to be maintained to look good. This means putting on new sealer every year. When chips in the edges happen it will stand out far more in stamped concrete and start to look shabby.

If you want to do stamped concrete, you might want to use it sparingly. If it is an accent to the driveway it will look a lot better and be easier to maintain. You also won't have your car wearing away the surface.
