Being ready for any scenario has people in Utah packing away wheat in buckets and putting a 72-hour kit in the trunk of their cars. If the power goes down, you could rely on solar or wind power, or you could get a light powered by salty water.

Device That Generates Electricity Through a Chemical Reaction

When you take magnesium and carbon and then soak them in seawater, a chemical reaction takes place, and the result is electricity. Harnessing this electricity and sending it through an LED light will give you an off-the-grid light source.

You can see how to make one in this video from YouTube.

The easier option is to buy a ready-made sea water lantern. There are different companies who make these. One of the benefits of the Water Light is how long it will last. It will give you 5,600 hours of light.

Light Even if you Don’t Live Near the Sea

You may be thinking this would be a great product if you lived by the ocean or near the Great Salt Lake. Not to worry. You can add salt to regular water to make the lantern light up, or you can even use urine in a pinch.

Another benefit to this lantern is that it can charge a phone or other small device. It might be handy to keep a couple of these light sources around if the electric grid goes down for a long time, or an EMP takes out your solar array.
