
New Movies Based on the Bible Coming to Utah May Not Be For Church Goers
There has been an increase in Bible related movies and TV shows with “The Chosen” being the most prominent example. Most of these are more traditional, but some are kind of different, and some are downright wacky and disturbing.
The History of Bible Movies Reveals a Wide Mixture
When you think of movies based on the Bible “The Ten Commandments” or “Ben Hur” usually come to mind. These traditional ways of telling the stories are only a small part of movies made with the good book as the setting.
There have been many movies about characters from the Bible that were spicy like “Samson and Delilah” in 1949. A movie in 1932 had a naked woman bathing in milk that resulted in calls for censorship.
Movies that have come out in the last 5 years have continued the tradition of exploring more than just the conservative telling.
Some Different Takes on the Bible Movie
In an article for the New York Times they note that there have been many different kinds of Bible movies and it often reflects where society is when they are made. Some of the movies made recently might make you think where we are these days.
“The Carpenter’s Son” with Nicolas Cage is more of a horror movie than Bible story. It is based on an apocryphal text called the Infancy Gospel of Thomas. A teenage Jesus causes mayhem as he tried to control his powers. It is not made for church goers.
“The Book of Clarence” features an atheist stoner in the main role. There is also a movie that takes Judas Iscariot’s side of the story. Then there are the television series telling the story of Moses that is comedic like "The Office".

Bible movies have definitely increased and many aren’t what you might expect. They also might just give you some insight into where we are at as a society.
