A Submission for the Trials

How does a demon progress? The trials are the key. Succubus and his classmates watch as older demons prepare to prove their skills in this most important ritual. The latest graduate submits his name as they watch intent on learning what they will need to know for their own attempt. Dave has written a 3 book fantasy series called “The Demon Curse” that discusses life in the underworld including their schooling.

I am posting a portion of the book per week. If you like riveting stories at the price of FREE this is for you. Here is the thirty-seventh installment of The Demon Curse Series Book #1 entitled “Son of Ruin” written by David E. Hiatt.

Chapter 7 Learning to Curse Installment 37

When the yearly Summoning arrived, Succubus and all the other students in the school made their way to the large area where all the demons had gathered. He sat with the other students to the side of the stand where the Ten Demon Lords reclined on their thrones. Again, he watched as the annual Summoning took place. He was flanked, as always, by Ghamegis and Ipses.

The horde of demons chanted and danced and the Ten summoned the yearlings one by one. Succubus wondered, not for the first time, where these huddled little beings that showed up in the cauldron came from.

After a time, the last of the yearlings had been summoned and the group of bloody, little demons were led away to the cave where they would be fed and washed.

The Trials Begin

The horde waiting to watch the trials began to rumble in anticipation.

The leader of the Ten, Lord Asag, rose and in his flat tone said, “Those who wish to submit for the trials may come forward.”

Succubus watched as a large demon with muscled shoulders and horns that rose from his head and turned up and forward, strode toward the stand in a confident, purposeful walk.

“State your name, demon,” said Lord Asag.

“I am Belphegor.”

The horde of demons roared their approval.

Introduction of the Arma Deu

Belphegor had dominated the school for the last year. Behind him were four other demons, including one of the Arma Deu. With extended forearms, he moved ape like behind the others. These four made up Belphegor’s inner group and had helped terrorize those beneath them.

“The arma are rare. Even if he fails the trials, he will be sent to the human world to relay messages. Their speed is amazing,” said Ghamegis.

After this, all those in their sixteenth year moved forward to the stand.

“Which of those poor wretches will fail the trials and be sent to the Pits?” asked Ipses with a grin.
