Make a New House in Utah While You Sleep With This 3D Printing Spider
Affordable housing is a big topic in the United States and in Utah. A new idea coming out of Australia could make building a house much more affordable. This new 3D printing spider could make houses while we sleep.
3D Printing Goes Mobile
We have already seen the ability to build walls by pouring a line of liquid material that hardens into a cement-like wall. This has sped things up, but this new technology could take it to a new level and very quickly.
Using a large-scale 3D printer that can build a house has meant either printing the structure where the printer is and moving it to the site or hauling the massive machine to each location. This new idea gives the printer legs to move itself.
It looks and moves like a giant spider, carrying the printer in the middle. Because it uses legs instead of wheels, it can move over almost any surface. This ability to easily move to a location and begin printing houses can lower costs dramatically.
Making Walls from Available Materials Found On-Site
The other cost in 3D printing houses up to this point is making and transferring the liquid material to build the walls. This means manufacturing it at one location and shipping it to the building site.
This spider 3D printer is made to use what is available like mud and ground up rock and bricks to form the building material. It is still in the design stage, but if it proves workable, it could change everything about building a house.
