There is a gathering of interstellar visitors taking place in the solar system right now, and you can mark the calendar for the 21st of October to get a look at the party. This is the time when these comets will be closest to earth.

Comets, Interstellar Visitors, and Meteor Showers All at Once

The comet R2 SWAN was discovered in September this year and is coming close to earth on the 19th of October. Even though this is a couple of days before the party date, it will be close enough to see it.

A6 Lemmon is the second comet that will make its closest approach on the 21st. It will come within 55 million miles of the earth, and you should be able to see it without needing a telescope.

A Couple Comets with a Meteor Shower for a Backdrop

If seeing a couple comets at the same time isn’t enough to get you to stay up staring into the night sky, add in a meteor shower. The Orionid meteor shower will be peaking during this time, giving a backdrop to the show.

But don’t think that is all that can be seen. Two more comets are moving around up there. K1 Atlas and 240P NEAT are up there and can be spotted with a good telescope. There’s something wild happening in our corner of space, and this is your chance to see it.
