See What is Growing Out of These Rabbit’s Face That Has People Thinking the its the End of the World
Pictures of wild rabbits with black horn like growths growing out of their face have been popping up in Colorado. These photos have people feeling unsettled and worried for these wild animals.
Disturbing Growth on Wild Rabbits are from a Virus
There is a virus called Papillomavirus that is causing this black growths that can are usually somewhere on the bunny’s head. Some look like horns and others grow around the mouth and eyes and can be up to several inches long.
Over time, the growth will go away on its own and isn’t harmful to the animal unless it makes it hard for it to eat. People have been weirded out by it and are afraid it might spread to other animals, but it only effects rabbits.
If you have bunnies as pets, you may not want them running loose until this virus runs its course. It is spread by biting insects like ticks and fleas and keeping pets close can lessen the risk.
There’s More to the Legend of the Western Jackalope
I have seen jackalopes in gift stores when traveling through Wyoming. Turns out it wasn’t just somebody’s weird idea to put antlers on a bunny to sell to tourists. This strange virus is probably the root of the legend.
The pictures showing up online have some people thinking of the end of the world. Some call them zombie rabbits or even some kind of alien. It reminds me of the scary book and movie "Watership Down" that was about vicious bunnies killing each other.
