People on social media expressed exasperation over a new law in Utah that requires people to buy a hunting or fishing license to hike or run in certain wildlife areas. It came to people’s awareness after a man posted about his experience on social media.

Wildlife Areas Have Become Popular and New Law Aims to Raise Fees

These areas of Utah are managed by the state for animals. Hunting and fishing licenses have provided money to maintain these places. A new law requires anyone over 18 entering designated management areas to buy a hunting or fishing license.

This has rubbed many people the wrong way. In the comments section of a YouTube video from KSL about the new law, people were overwhelmingly against it. Most unhappy about the government charging fees to run or walk on public land.

Law Aims to Require All Users to Pay for State Management

On a Facebook story about the new law, some of those who hunt and fish in wildlife management areas expressed approval for the new law. They said it is about time everyone using the land has to chip in.

They described how their hunting and fishing can be disrupted by clueless people out sightseeing.  Others were unhappy with all the fees the state requires on public land and suggested other ways to raise funds.

Requiring a fishing license to run in these areas is confusing and will probably be addressed. I would imagine they will adopt something like an access license or something. Whatever is decided, this is a thorny issue that isn’t going away soon.
