Having a dog in the house means never ending amounts of hair on the carpet, the couch, and floating in the air. You may not win the battle of the dog hair but you can turn it into a sweater. Here’s how to make dog yarn. 

Collect Clumps of Fur, Clean it, and Spin It 

Dog fur is soft and fuzzy like angora. It is also light and warm which can make a nice blanket or sweater. Dogs with longer coats will work better. Here’s how to turn your dogs excess fur into yarn.

1. Brush the Dog

When your dog needs a good brush down, take the clumps of discarded fur and collect it in a plastic bag. 

2. Clean the Fur

Wash the fur using shampoo and conditioner. Wash  out the dirt, grass, and burrs, and separate out the fur that clumps. 

3. Straighten the Fibers

When it is dry, you do the carting process. This is where you drag the fibers across brushes that get them going the same direction. 

4. Twist the Fibers

Using a roving tool you spin it into yarn. When you have enough yarn, start knitting a sweater or whatever else you want. 

Are you interested in items made from dog hair? There is a website dedicated to making dog yarn and items from it. Most of these look pretty fuzzy when they are done. It looks cozy, but if it gets wet I hope it doesn't smell like a wet dog.
