Aircraft-Based Remote-Controlled Equipment is not Allowed

It has become popular when hiking in places with soaring cliffs to get a closer look by flying a drone with a camera above and around obstacles. If you have watched videos of people exploring ancient ruins built into the cliffs in the Southwest, you have seen this technique.

A small drone with a camera can be packed in and then flown to places on the cliff face that are hard to reach. It also gives an amazing view of red rock canyons and the trail to get there, not to mention petroglyphs out of reach of those on the ground.

It is hard to beat the spectacular cliffs and canyons in Zion National Park, but don’t try to pack in a drone to get footage of these cliffs. Drones are not allowed to be used. The national park website has a list of rules and regulations that are there to protect visitors and the resources of the park.

Drones Are Not Just Banned in Zion

In fact, drones can’t be used in any of the National Parks. From their site they say these remote aircraft have been lost in the geysers of Yellow Stone. One person flew a drone and tried to land it on one of the faces at Mount Rushmore.

It is not hard to see why the use of drones causes problems with other visitors and losing it over the edge of the Grand Canyon would be detrimental. Most the people using this technology would be doing it to promote a video or for other professional reasons and this is regulated in the Parks.

You may wonder who is in charge of policing drone activity and what will happen if someone flies one anyway and disturbs the wildlife or endangers other visitors. The park rangers enforce the ban and can site those who break the rules.

If you plan on visiting the national parks in Southern Utah, do the looking with your eyes and record it in your memories.
