Hurricanes and Utah

Utah may not have hurricanes brewing over the Great Salt Lake, but that doesn’t mean we don’t love a good weather-related thrill. Whether it's the sudden snowstorms in May or wind that will keep your kite up till next season, Utah knows a thing or two about wild weather. But here’s something you might not have checked—"is your name on the official hurricane list this year?"

Speaking of names and weather events. Why don't we give names to localized Utah weather events. We don't name our droughts, snowstorms or even dust devils. What gives? Are our storms not as important as the named ones? It just seems a little unfair that we can't refer to our natural phenomenon by name.

How Hurricane Names Are Chosen

Hurricane names are picked in alphabetical order, rotating between traditionally male and female names. The list skips the letters Q, U, X, Y, and Z (so sorry to all the Utah Quades, Xanders, and Utahna’s out there). And every six years, the names reset—unless a storm is so destructive that its name gets retired.
