Found Only in Two Places in Utah and New Mexico

Red Beryl was discovered in 1904 by a guy named Maynard Bixby in Juab County, Utah. It was the first time beryl had been discovered in this color and it was named bixbite after him. Because of how rare it is worth a lot of money.

Gem Rock auctions gives this description of the value of red beryl:

Red beryl is 100-times rarer than emerald and worth 1,000-times more than gold. One red beryl crystal is found for every 150,000 diamonds, and a 2-carat red beryl gemstone is as rare as a 40-carat diamond.

This rare gemstone is only found in two locations in Utah and one place in New Mexico. The Wah Wah Mountains in Beaver County are where some of the best red beryl deposits are found. These are on private claims that you need permission to visit.

The other place in Utah is the Thomas Range near Wildhorse Springs. The stones  are found in cracks and crevices in the rock and screened to find the gemstones. The Black Range in New Mexico also contains deposits of red beryl.
