Eastern Utah was notorious for outlaws like Butch Cassidy who hid out in the box canyons and rugged red rocks. There is a story of one of these outlaws who was an old man in 1910 and confided in younger coworker about where there was treasure buried.

Outlaw Stash Worth Hundreds of Thousands of Dollars

The younger man’s name was Baker, and he was working in a logging camp. The older gentleman said he had been a member of one of the outlaw gangs in eastern Utah. There were 10 of them and they had stolen some silver bars and other bags of money.

He said they were pursued and, in their haste, climbed on of two identical mesas that rose out of the valley floor. On top of the mesa, they found a small lake of water. They deposited the silver bars and other loot into the water to retrieve later.

The old man said he was the last surviving member of the gang and that none had ever gone back for the treasure. The young man named Baker later joined the air core and convinced a fellow soldier to help him find the mesas and the stash.

Three Deaths and Some Fruitless Searches

The young Baker and his friends borrowed and airplane to find the mesas but never returned and were never found. Before they left, Baker shared the story of the treasure with his older brother in the east.

Soon the older Baker set out on his own quest for the treasure in the lake only to end up passing away from a heart attack. After that, his grand kids and others have searched for the location, but it has all been fruitless.

To this day, no one has found the silver bars and money. With tools like google earth, finding matching mesas with a lake on top of one should be a lot easier.

So, the next time you take a break, rather than scanning social media, maybe you go and scan some satellite images of eastern Utah.
