Chapter 6 A Painful Lesson Learned Installment 34

What is happening? he wondered.

He could feel the air pushing him upwards and did his best to try and see how his instructor was accomplishing it.

I feel the air below supporting me.

Then Borgin swept his palm down, releasing the vacuum and viciously slammed Succubus to the rock floor. His body made a sickening crunch when he hit.

Borgin raised the young demon again and again, each time violently slamming him to the rock. After one last mighty crash, Borgin stopped.

Succubus lay on his back, battered and bruised. His face scrunched up in pain.

But the lesson wasn’t over. Borgin willed fire to burn from a crack in the rock nearby, enveloping the feet of Succubus. This he fed with oxygen, causing it to burn bright and making his hated student scream in pain. Fire doesn’t physically harm demons, but it hurts the same. Succubus screamed and screamed, until finally, Borgin let the fire go out and released him from the enclosing pressure.

Curled up on the rock, Succubus lay with his eyes closed, nursing his burning feet.

He had learned a lesson.

He would not try to stare down another demon that had more knowledge of cursing than he did, and he would do his best to understand the elements quickly. Using every spare moment to practice, he would master and hone his skills so that facing one who outmatched him would become a shrinking possibility.
