There are old mines all over Utah and most of them are dangerous to enter. For this reason, public land managers have blocked the entrances to many of these old caverns. Getting around these is against the law and dangerous.

This is a mine entrance in Utah that has iron bars blocking the entrance. Someone’s curiosity got the better of them and they removed part of it to get inside. Looking into the mine you can see how dangerous it can be.

There are wood posts holding up part of the wall along with metal braces spanning a deep pit. Whoever made their way in placed boards across these braces to get to the other side. If they were to fall, it would be a long drop with no one around to help. 

Criminal Trespassing Charges for Those Who Bypass Blocked Mines 

Section 76-6-206.1 is the law in Utah that addresses abandoned and inactive mines. It describes what criminal trespass and the penalty for doing so. These penalties increase based on the reason for entering the mine. 

If you were to get stuck in the mine and were lucky enough to get rescued, you would then face charges for entering it in the first place. There is good reason for these laws and precautions.

Even experienced miners won’t go into an unstable old mine. There are sometimes left over explosives, and it can be easy to get disoriented. If you run across a blocked entrance, shine your light in, but stay on the safe side of the bars.
