Mentally Stuck

As an adult student I already felt a little behind and this particular class had my number. I sat staring at the computer trying to make my thoughts bend to the ideas the lesson proposed but could not understand it. In frustration, I stepped away from my computer and decided to take a walk, a walk I didn't have time for and frankly a walk that felt like a surrender to failure.

The walk was fairly unremarkable, but when I got back to the computer the principles in the lesson settled in like magic.

A Second Opinion

On the heels of this breakthrough, I just happened to pick up a magazine and read an inspirational account that described someone in higher education getting stuck and how they took an introspective walk only to find understanding upon their return. "So, something is special about a walk", I remember thinking.

Walking a Super Tool

I have used this special tool regularly and am surprised every time that it seems to bring tangible results especially in Utah where we have such an abundance of gorgeous walks. Here are the details about why a walk might be one of your great tools when you feel mentally stuck according to Peloton:

Walking Improves Focus

Walking offers a cascade of cognitive benefits. It gives your brain a “channel change,” exposing it to new stimuli and breaking mental ruts. It also helps regulate stress by giving you space to reflect and reframe your thoughts.

Even short walks can lower depression risk and boost endorphins—those feel-good chemicals that sharpen focus and lift mood.

Walking and Mindfulness

Breathing deeply, listening to music, or simply observing your surroundings can turn a stroll into a mini therapy session. And if you’re stuck in a loop of anxious thoughts, walking in nature can help quiet the noise and restore perspective.

Now, when I hit a wall, I don’t just sit and stew—I walk it off in beautiful Southern Utah. It’s not surrender. It’s strategy.
