Popular Artist Expresses His Love for Southern Utah

With a career spanning 50 years, Mickey Thomas of Starship is bringing his talents to Southern Utah as part of the I-15 Country & Rock Music Festival. I had a chance to speak with Mickey and he described how much he loves the beauty of the area.

A Touring Artist’s Perspective on Travel

Mickey Thomas had his first big hit with the Elvin Bishop Group in 1974. He went on to join Jefferson Starship where he had three massive hits singing with Grace Slick. Also had many solo projects where he saw much success.

As you can imagine, Mickey has seen almost every state in the union and many of the country’s all over the world in his travels. So, I asked him if he had been to Southern Utah and what he thought of it?

“Two or three years in a row I vacationed at Lake Powell,” said Thomas. He came to love driving through the red rocks of Southern Utah and Northern Arizona. He has played concerts in the area and is always stunned by the beauty.

Retirement Not in the Cards for this Rock Star

“I enjoy so much performing and being on stage,” said Thomas and he shows no signs of slowing down. Now in his mid 70s, the iconic singer is healthy and happy. He says he is still creating and singing new music, but in concert, he sticks to the songs people came to hear.

Some of his secret to thriving in the music world is his sense of gratitude for everything he has been given. “Just fortunate that I can still do it and have fun on stage,” said Thomas. “I’m just thankful that my voice is really good, my health has been really good to me.”

That grateful perspective might be a lesson we can all learn. A dose of thankfulness can do wonders for your outlook whether you are an iconic rock star or a normal person who enjoys their music.
