Are Scammers Targeting Utah? Easy Ways To Thwart Them
Utah is on the high side for online activity which must include online streaming services like Disney+, Netflix, Prime, and so on. Knowing this, we should be on the alert as these services have become one of the latest targets for scammers.
Why Target Streaming Services:
Streaming services have one of the things those scammers are after, the transfer of funds. You pay for the service, and they want to step between you and the streaming company, so you are paying them. What’s worse, once you pay them, they have the ability to keep taking money from that account to which they hope you gave them access.
The Scam
Here is how the scam will often play out. You get an email from the streaming service. The scammer used to struggle to use proper English but are becoming savvier with the help of AI. The email will warn you that your account is either locked or will be unless you take action. Be on the alert for time crunch warnings, panic is key to getting us to drop our defenses and common sense. The email or notification will have a button to click, a phone number to call or an action to take to resolve the issue. Do not let your love of Beast Games overwhelm you take a deep breath.
How to Dodge the Scam
Your biggest and strongest tool in your “don’t scam me” tool chest is this simple rule that you should always follow. DO NOT click, call, or follow any instructions in the initial notification. Calmly look up the service provider from previous interactions or online, making sure you have found the actual company and then contact them through the known company line. This will keep the scammer from leading you into their traps.
