One and two and three and four and pick them up, let’s go give it four more minutes. You can do it push it, let’s see that inner skinny you.

That is what I am used to hearing when I am exercising, even when I am not following a video. It is burned in my head, "work out long and hard and push through the pain". 45 to 60 minutes later I am hot tired and ready to procrastinate the next work out for a few days or weeks.

If you feel the same, you might look at a new trend that is sweeping our area. Especially since we desert dwellers love being physically fit, which probably stems from a lifestyle where a good time usually includes some physical exertions.

So, what is this trend? It is called High Intensity Interval Training or HIIT.

What is HIIT?

What does it entail? Well, I am glad you asked, it is exercising at a fast and furious pace, but at shorter intervals. Think of getting the heart rate up and flexing those muscles without the routine dragging on and on. Look for activities that last 15 seconds to 4 minutes that can be repeated, and your goal is to get your heart rate to 80% of its maximum.

Why HIIT?

The benefits that this discipline offers are impressive. Probably the one that excites me most includes studies that show how a high intensity for a short time routine can turn back time for our bodies on a cellular level. It’s the fountain of youth, baby (maybe literal baby).
