There was a time when you tipped your waiter if you received exceptional service. Now it is surprising when you are paying for your food and you don’t get a tipping screen option after you scan your card. This tipping culture has increased all over Utah.

Growing Discontent with Tipping Practices

WalletHub shared the results of a recent survey that shows consumers are getting tired of the expanded tipping options. There’s even a significant number, 2 out of 5, who think the United States should ban all tips.

A little more than half say they feel social pressure to tip. These are probably the same who would like the option taken away. If you avoid conflict by tipping when the employee is staring you down, you likely prefer to see the awkward situation banned.

Are Tips Truly Benefiting Employees?

Another interesting part of the survey showed that 64% felt that the business was profiting from the tip and not the employees. That these food places were getting away with paying their people less thanks to pushing customers to tip more.

It would be interesting to know if this is starting to play out in the choices people make. If tipping causes potential customers to have a negative view of the business, over time, it could make an impact. On the other hand, do non-tipping businesses gain favor?

Whatever happens with all the demand for tips out there, it does seem like there is some tipping fatigue setting in. The fact that many screens now have a large "no tip" option would indicate businesses are aware of the push back.
