Feeling Underwhelmed Utah? The Peanut Butter Raise Explained
If you have had your ear to the manager's office wall you might have heard the term "Peanut Butter Raise", being thrown around. What Exactly is a peanut butter raise and why we might understand it more effectively in Southern Utah.
What is this "Peanut Butter Raise?
A peanut butter raise is when a company spreads the raise money across everyone—like peanut butter on toast, even, and possibly not enough to make you feel anything except vaguely insulted. It’s the corporate equivalent of your boss saying, “We value you,” while handing you a coupon for 10% off morale.
It’s not targeted. It’s not strategic. It might not even be meaningful.
but it is evenly smeared.
Why This Hits Different in Southern Utah
Southern Utah is uniquely qualified to understand the peanut‑butter‑raise lifestyle because:
Just enough water.
Just enough shade.
Just enough patience to survive the boost in traffic during Softball tournament season.

A peanut butter raise fits us in another way. Nothing is stretched thinner than the Colorado River. "Water, water nowhere and hardly a drop to drink", I believe is the Rime of the Desert Mariner.
I love Southern Utah, but our economy does not strike me as one whose salaries are much higher than the cost of living. Raise time is usually paired with a comment like, "Of course it’s not enough to cover the gas price increase, but hey it's a raise."
But then, Southern Utahns have mastered the art of making tiny things stretch.
We stretch paychecks.
We stretch AC units.
We stretch the definition of “it’s not that hot” well into the triple digits.

So when a raise comes in that’s thinner than the peanut butter at a budget hotel breakfast bar, just shrug it off because we’ve perfected the art of surviving on vibes, iced drinks, and stubborn optimism, and know exactly how to laugh about it—and keep going.
