
Don’t Burden The Next Generation With Stuff You Value That is Just Junk
It is hard to get rid of sentimental items from the past. Here are some things to look at that are taking up space and will probably never be used. Rather than let your kids do the job when you're gone, take the time to clear it out now.
Collections That Aren’t Really a Collection Anyone Wants
I have a whole bunch of hats given to me over the years displaying different companies' logos. Many are in brand new condition. This collection is not valuable to anyone, and I threw away the worst ones and donated the rest.
My brother John works with a charity for the homeless. He says men hang onto a lot of stuff they shouldn’t. One man who passed away left never been worn Super Bowl shirts from the last 40 championship teams. Sort of cool but just taking up space in storage.
That China Set from Grandma
These special sets of dishes once sat in a cabinet that at least worked as a display. Now they are wrapped in old newspaper and taking up room in the garage. There is never a special occasion for these, and it will just be a burden should you give them to a grandkid.
They can’t be washed in a dishwasher, and they would just be weird to get out for dinner when their friends come over. Sell it online to someone who will weigh down their own grandkids with it.
Magazines, Book Sets, and Encyclopedias
There was a time when every home had a shelf of National Geographic magazines and a bookcase with a full set of encyclopedias. That day is no longer. Information is not hard to come by, in fact, we are drowning in it.

Recycle these collections of the past. You may have the works of Plato and Aristotle on the shelf, but it is far easier to look up a digital version online. I know it is painful, but it is time to let go of some of these past staples before your kids have to do it for you.
