San Diego to Utah: Retailers on Security Overdrive
Picture this: you stroll through the doors at your local grocery store, and find yourself in a retail maze, fenced off from the outside world like you're entering a top-secret government facility.
Albertsons on 14th Street and Market in San Diego has done just that with two entrance gates that are easy enough to navigate, but with a catch—you can check in anytime you like, but can you ever leave? Well, only if you successfully maneuver through the self-checkout and scan your receipt to freedom!
These efforts are in reaction to thefts in the store and if the San Diego Albertsons experiment proves successful, you bet other stores will be watching, ready to adopt similar policies faster than you can say "paper or plastic?"
So, will Utah be next? You have already noticed added measures popping up here and there, locked items behind glass, Costco checks your receipt on the way out, and random security detail but will anti-theft measures increase in our Utah stores? Will we find ourselves navigating through gateways and security checkpoints?
What are some anti-theft measures you have experienced that you hope don't make it to our area?
The locked up items on shelves are a pain, I hope we don't see more product that you have to ask for assistance to purchase.
In Las Vegas a store is limiting the number of customers allowed in. Will shopping start to be like Black Friday Sales where you have to line up before you are allowed into the store, or maybe even more haunting like when we were coming out of the COVID restrictions and you had to wait for someone to leave before you could go in?
Keep your eyes open and your patience high as we see how stores react to the San Diego Albertsons experiment.
