To get by with a decent amount of comfort in the United States Gobankrates.com estimates the average salary for one person needs to be at $57,000 per year. This is the average but obviously, depending on where you live will determine if that is enough or more than you need.

There was a time when Utah was a pretty good bargain compared to other parts of America. You could move from California and buy more house and more land by transferring to the beehive state. Now, with more industries offering better salaries, the cost of living has increased in Utah.

How do we compare to the rest of the United States? Well, we are not in the top 10 highest. Those are mostly states on the west coast or the east coast and Hawaii is the highest at $112,411 annual salary needed to live there. Massachusetts was next followed by California.

Utah is not in the lowest 10 either. You need an income of $45,906 in Mississippi to get by. Next lowest is Oklahoma and then Alabama.

Utah sits almost at the average with $55,293. That is the amount of money a single person needs to get by in Utah. Here’s the bad news. ZipRecruiter estimates the average salary in Utah at $48,414. This is probably the reason Utah ranks so high in personal debt.

I’m sure there are other factors that help or hinder people being able to pay their expenses. Hopefully the average salary and the cost of living will begin to equal out here in Utah.
