Southern Utah is an area where others have long lived. Native peoples moved through the area for hundreds of years and left their mark on the rocks. Many of these petroglyphs are well known, but sometimes you find them in unexpected places.

Here are some things to remember if you find yourself looking at ancient markings in the rock. Treat the area with respect. You aren’t the first to live in the area and you won’t be the last. Leave things alone so others can learn and discover what you have.

The Importance of Preservation for Future Generations

Don’t touch the pictures carved there. The oil on your hands can get on the rock and disturb the surface. There are lichens and bacteria and touching this area will cause an imbalance.

To record what you have found, just take pictures. Using chalk to enhance the picture will result in damage. And certainly, don’t deface the rock with something sharp or with spray paint. Doing so is a federal crime with stiff penalties.
